What happened?
Verra announced that the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market recognised VCS Version 5 as meeting the programme-level criteria of the Core Carbon Principles. VCS Version 5 was released in December 2025 with strengthened requirements across the project lifecycle.
Why it matters
Carbon buyers increasingly distinguish between programme governance, methodology quality and individual project performance. Programme-level recognition can support confidence, but it does not remove the need for project-level due diligence or determine that every credit automatically carries the same characteristics.
Who should care?
- Corporate carbon-credit buyers and procurement teams.
- Project developers using the VCS Program.
- Marketplaces, ratings providers and carbon advisers.
- Investors evaluating carbon-project pipelines.
GreenShift signal
Integrity is becoming more structured and more granular. Useful carbon intelligence must connect programme status, methodology status, project information and credit-level attributes rather than treating a registry name as a complete quality signal.
