What happened?
Verra announced that VCS methodology VM0018, covering energy-efficiency and solid-waste-diversion activities within a sustainable community, will be inactivated from 1 September 2027. Verra said its routine review found that the methodology no longer met recent VCS requirements because its quantification procedure was not sufficiently detailed, while several activities are already covered by other active methodologies.
Why it matters
Methodologies are not static infrastructure. Standards review, revise and retire them as integrity requirements evolve. Developers, investors and buyers therefore need to understand not only whether a project uses a recognised methodology today, but also whether transition deadlines or replacement approaches could affect future registration, verification or issuance activity.
Who should care?
- Project developers using or evaluating older VCS methodologies.
- Carbon buyers conducting methodology-level due diligence.
- Advisers and technology providers maintaining carbon-project databases.
- Industrial companies exploring waste-diversion or energy-efficiency crediting.
